Claim XLif - Extraterrestrial Life by 2050

Category: Science & Technology:Space bid 51, ask 56, last 53

Judge:51, link@enif.astro.indiana.edu
created:1995/01/27
due date:2054/12/31

The Claim

Evidence of Extraterrestrial Life, fossils, or remains will be found by 12/31/2050. Dead or extinct extraterrestrial Life counts, but contamination by human spacecraft doesn't count. (Life engineered or created by humans doesn't count.) The Life must have been at least 10,000 miles from the surface of the Earth. If Earth bacteria have somehow got to another planet and thrived, it counts, as long as the transportation wasn't by human space activities. Some kinds of evidence are: detection of intelligent radio signals from space; detection of a Dyson Sphere, or other giant engineering project in space; finding cells from a non-Earth biology in a meteorite; finding fossils on Mars; finding sufficiently complex molecules on Titan to indicate Life; finding a non-human-manufactured artifact, such as (incontrovertible) flying saucer wreckage; finding a planet with an O2 (or other oxidizing) atmosphere (but this alone is not conclusive). Spiritual beings like gods and ghosts don't count as Life; nor do memes and the like. The definition of Life must be up to the judge --- but viruses and prions are alive, and fire is not. At a minimum, reproduction or growth or intelligence or communication is required.

Judge's Statement
